Would you eat tomato sauce on mashed potatoes?
What if there was butter on the mashed potatoes?

W. Pooh (AKA Winnie P.),
Heck no!!!
I remember the owner of the twin house in L.A., inviting us to dinner.
She served a side dish of mac'n'cheese in a tomato sauce.
It looked revolting! I ate a bite or two so as not to offend.
Not probably as revolting as the mashed potato dish you describe!
Best,
Andy

Yes. I believe I would. Not sure if I'd like it, but it's worth a shot.

Depends how hungry I was, and what other options were available.
It might surprise me; that's common enough. Chili on mashed potatoes
isn't completely unheard of for example.

by its lonesome.

I've had chili on mashed potatoes. Actually pretty good in a junky
kind of way.

if i came starving out of the bush and the hermit that i stumbled upon
all he had was mashed potatoes topped with hunts tomato sauce, i'd
refuse the sauce and just eat the potatoes. if i didn't have a
choice, if there was no menu choice, then i suppose i'd eat the pots
topped with tomSauce. otherwise, i'd have to lose my sense of taste,
smell and sight before i'd eat that combo.

pass the butter, hold the tomSauce.

I have a recipe in a reprint of a British cookbook put out during WWII that
has a recipe for Lobscouse in it. Said it was fed to sailors. I don't know
how they came up with the name because it is anything but what the real
Lobscouse is.
Anyway to make it you start with a little melted butter, then make a cheese
sauce and add some canned tomatoes that you have chopped to bits. You add
the juice too. This is served over mashed potatoes. It is very good!

Potentially, but only if I did not have on hand, and was too lazy to
go out and obtain, pasta or polenta.

Gack.

In the U.K. it is popular to serve various toppings on baked Russett
potatoes (called "jacket potatoes" locally). Marinara sauce is
one choice. Cheese is another choice. I have not seen them
combined but it would not surprise me.

Many of my Italian ancestors have no problem with tomato sauce on mashed
potatoes. Maybe they see it as being like gnocchi? I don't know.

Swiss (or swissed) steak, which has a tomato based sauce is commonly
served with mashed potatoes and the combination is very good.
