Default Today's soup

I started out to make my normal potato soup, which is just potatoes,
bacon, onions, and stock, simmered until the potatoes fall apart and the
soup gets a little thick. But then I realized I had half a zucchini
left -- James won't notice that if it simmers until it falls apart, too.
Oh, and that ham bone -- if I put it into the soup, I don't have to make
a separate pot of bean soup later. Wait, there's a half-empty jar of
sauerkraut in the fridge. It's still good; maybe that should go in, too.

This'll either be yummy or inedible. Anyone wanna take bets?

I'd say the kraut wasn't a good idea.

We'll see how it goes. It does well in my slow-cooked
pork-and-potatoes-and-kraut thing, so maybe it'll be okay here. If not,
I'll puree everything and see if that makes it better.

I kind of like sauerkraut with potatoes. When I make spare ribs and
sauerkraut I like to serve mashed potatoes on the side so I can mix the
kraut with the potatoes.

Personally, I wouldn't mind the kraut in the soup at all.

If it doesn't work with just the potatoes, add some sliced kielbasa or
leftover ham. The smokiness of the sausage or ham will offset the acid
of the kraut.

In addition to the ham and bacon that are already in there? :-)

I was with you until the sauerkraut. Better call out for pizza.

She started out with a perfectly respectable potato soup, then decided
to sneak zucchini past "James," and then contemplated rendering it
totally nasty by adding kraut.

I would have left the sauerkraut out. And I think navy bean soup is the best
use for a ham bone.

Not even the same as having it on the side, or even mixed in to potatoes.

We just did barbecue and collards from the best bbq place in town. The ham
bone will keep.

Well, as it turns out, it's really delicious. Forgot to mention the 10
cloves of garlic (left whole). This is really good soup. I'm relieved.

Glad you liked it. The kraut was obviously just my opinion. I didn't
think it went with the zuk.

The kraut ruined it for me too but at least she liked it. And I love
sauerkraut too.

Should be fine if you rinse the sauerkraut first.

Tangentially, I just finished eating some red cabbage sauteed with
Fatted Calf pancetta. That works...

Glad it turned out. I love the combination of ham, cabbage and
potatoes. Adding the extra flavor is up to the eater. Garlic would
be on my list.

Well, what's the verdict from James and the kid?

James and Carin (who is not the kid) say it's really good. The kid is
engrossed in her World of Warcraft raid and will come down and test it
when she can take a break.
