Ew! Why was that in there? I did get sandwiches there twice recently and
mine weren't bad. Not as bad as I remembered them to be. I had Italian
bread, turkey, lettuce, tomato and onion. Daughter had two kinds of cheese
and lettuce. I tried to get one with everything for husband. I used to get
them that way but now apparently they have so many sauces, the guy said I
should only get two. He has always loved Subway. Me? Not so much.

It bleachs the doughand makes it unnaturally white. Real bread made with
high protein flour has a dull and very egg shell like color. I am sure
another ingredient of their bread is sawdust. That one is widely used.

I didn't know that. I only buy unbleached flour if it is white flour. And
I generally buy whole wheat bread. Hmmm... I know that sawdust is widely
    used. Again, ew.

They are not near us but I got my husband one of those HUGE ones with
everything on it. I was astounded at how big it was. Gone in less than 24
    hours.

The stench of their bread is sickening. There are two items that I buy at
Wal Mart, and I go there early in the morning so I don't have to smell that
    ****.

I'd never eaten at Subway before we took a car trip around the USA. I
tried to like it but their bread was terrible - way too spongy. Now I
know why. You can pick out ingredients for a sandwich that are pretty
decent there, but you're still stuck with their bread.

Maybe they need to contract for dumpster dumping more than once a month.

Seriously, that has put me off from a couple of restaurants. There is a
Sweet Tomatoes buffet nearby, and the dumpster often smells of festering
garbage, enough that we drove in one day last summer, got out of the car,
sniffed, got back in the car and ate somewhere else, after a drink. The odor
made me not want to eat anything for a while. This is not uncommon even in
winter, and some of the offenders are suprisingly upscale restaurants. But
none ever approaches the ripeness of that particular Sweet Tomatoes
    restaurant.

This stench seems to come from the baking of bread since that is the
underlying smell: Baking bread with a bunch of **** in it.

It's hard to imagine bread so bad it stinks when it's baked. But then I
don't patronize Subway. If I'm desperate for a snack while I'm out, I'd
rather have a McDouble any day. No way I'd ever eat a regular meal at
Subway, or Quiznos for that matter. I've tried each... once.

But if there is sawdust in the bread, maybe that explains how "Jared" lost a
bazillion pounds eating that crap, because in normal metabolisms, chomping
down a big fat old bread roll with some stingy ingredients three times a day
is not a path to weight loss.

The article mentions an ingredient called azodicarbonamide which is also
used to make yoga mats and shoe rubber. Yummy! Let's toast some!

When you say "sawdust" I know *exactly* what you're talking about. Some
people didn't believe me when I said I bought Oroweat brand "whole
wheat" hamburger buns in the 1980s and found they contained wood pulp.
(I guess that's when I started reading labels. Heheh.) Here I thought
I'd bought something healthy. (Ever eat a pine tree? Not willingly. LOL)

Here's an old article about wood cellulose in bread. 1985 would have
been about right. That particular brand is mentioned:

My brother likes Subway. I was never impressed with it. I didn't think
there were horrible and disgusting, just not very good.

What an amazing coincidence that after all the years they have been in
business they suddenly decided all on their own to change the recipe at
the same time that a blogger was gathering a petition to get them to
    remove that ingredient.

Yes... quite a coincidence! Paraphrasing: Oh, we were planning to do
that all along. No you weren't. You just realized people could
actually demand a better product or boycott the chain. Surprise!
