You all remember Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona , who painted the jail
cells pink and made the inmates wear pink prison garb. Well...

SHERIFF JOE IS AT IT AGAIN!

Maricopa County was spending approx. $18 million dollars a year on stray
animals, like cats and dogs. Sheriff Joe offered to take the department
over, and the County Supervisors said okay.

The animal shelters are now all staffed and operated by prisoners. They
feed and care for the strays. Every animal in his care is taken out and
walked twice daily. He now has prisoners who are experts in animal
nutrition and behavior. They give great classes for anyone who’d like to
adopt an animal. He has literally taken stray dogs off the street, given
them to the care of prisoners, and had them place in dog shows.

The best part? His budget for the entire department is now under $3
million.

The prisoners get the benefit of about $0.28 an hour for working, but
most would work for free, just to be out of their cells for the day. Most
of his budget is for utilities, building maintenance, etc. He pays the
prisoners out of the fees collected for adopted animals.

I have long wondered when the rest of the country would take a look at
the way he runs the jail system, and copy some of his ideas. He has a
huge farm, donated to the county years ago, where inmates can work, and
they grow most of their own fresh vegetables and food, doing all the
work and harvesting by hand.

He has a pretty good sized hog farm, which provides meat, and
fertilizer. It fertilizes the Christmas tree nursery, where prisoners
work, and you can buy a living Christmas tree for $6 - $8 for the
Holidays, and plant it later.

HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED
OVER AND OVER THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (In Arizona ) who created the ‘ Tent City Jail’: He
has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for
them.

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their
weights.... Cut off all but ‘G’ movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and
city projects.

Then He Started Chain Gangs For Women So He Wouldn’t Get Sued For
Discrimination. (Ya gotta love that!!! :-)

He took away cable TV Until he found out there was A Federal Court Order
that Required Cable TV For Jails So He Hooked Up The Cable TV Again Only
Let In The Disney Channel And The Weather Channel.

When asked why the weather channel He Replied, So They Will Know How Hot
It’s Gonna Be While They Are Working ON My Chain Gangs.

He Cut Off Coffee Since It Has Zero Nutritional Value.

When the inmates complained, he told them, ‘This Isn’t The Ritz/Carlton!!
If You Don’t Like It, Don’t Come Back.’

Way To Go, Sheriff!

Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime
and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for their crimes -
not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to
go out and commit another crime so they can get
back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy
things taxpayers can't afford to have for
themselves.

Having lived and worked in Maricopa County for the past ten years, I
think Arpaio is a complete ass, as are his strongest supporters. You
have no idea what it's like living in his juristiction, not to mention
that his sheriff's are a little too trigger happy. You also have no
idea how many local residents would love to see him out of office.
Unfortunately, his opponents simply haven't been strong enough to
overturn him.

I didn't suggest coddling them did I? Arpaio forgets that these are
people after all despite their crimes. Subjecting people to sunstroke
is sub-human treatment.

I see nothing wrong with raising food for the prison system and work
won't hurt them either providing they are not treated as slaves or
subjects of derision. Wearing pink clothes is just plain stupid.
Arpaio likes to make out that he is the judge, jury, jailer and owner
of these citizens. I've seen the turkey on TV crowing and preening and
acting the bigshot...no not my idea of an overseer I would hire or
elect.

They aren't being subjected to sunstroke. They are being made to live in
non-airconditioned accomodation. Just like the troops serving in Iraq and
Afghanistan are doing, except the cons aren't being made to wear full
battle gear and go out and get blown up, or shot. They are being made to
go out and clean up the community they have commited crimes against.
So what if they are in chains outside!! That stops the cons from escaping.

No, he is running the prison system, and now the animal welfare system
effectively, and cost worthy.

That just goes to show that he isn't your usual run of the mill public
servant out to rip off the taxpayer as much as possible.

Did you stop to think for one second that he is giving the cons training
in various fields that they would never have got before? One is growing
their own food, the other is running the animal welfare center. Seems a
lot of the dogs they are looking after are being put into Shows, and
winning!!

I couldn't stand Phoenix, for the most part.

Visited my aunt and uncle in Sun City. Not Africa's Sun City. But the
name does bother me.

Got sunburned sitting out in the backyard at 9am in just about 10
minutes!!!

I was told that I had to wear a bathing cap to swim in the public
swimming pool. Something about the hard (?) water. I didn't swim!

And!!! everyone mostly drove around in electric golf carts. Not a bad
idea actually, IF YOU COULD ON OCCASION GET TO 5 MPH!!! Life in the fast
lane! HA!!!

AND!!! the lawns were green colored pebbles, because it was so hot in
the desert that you couldn't afford to tend a lawn!

From the airport to Sun City we drove past an orange grove for about a
mile (seemed like millions). The aroma filled the air. It was
overwhelmingly intoxicating!!! :P

What impressed me the most was the birds (wrens?, I forget) that would
streak across the yard at full blast and fly into the cactus. I thought
"dead meat!!!" but on a close up inspection they'd sit inside, happily,
chirping and stuff! A remarkable event!

There are some great food places there, showcased on food TV programs
that I'd like to try.

When prisoners start making you a profit, that's when you start
jailing people just because you need more laborers to increase your
business.
