I've seen them perch a lot! I had one that takes up residence in a tree
near the feeder (tree is gone now; it was dead so I had it cut down) and
would guard it from there from other hummers. As soon as another tried
to land on the feeder he'd chase it off. They are so funny to watch
guard their territory!
