Portable appliance for heating milk?
I travel a lot, and I end up at hotels that don't have a microwave,
and also at all-day events where I would love to have hot chocolate.
Some of the places are surprisingly cold. I don't want the powdered
mix kind, but real milk and chocolate syrup. I don't like coffee, tea,
or lame hot chocolate. So, the only way to have a hot drink I like is
it make it myself.
I hate stopping at a place along the way, as I usually end up paying
extra to get extra chocolate only to have it not be enough (I like
mine brown, almost looks like coffee). And it tends to cool off before
I can finish it anyway.
I would really like to take something with me that I can just plug in
and heat up my own. I have found water heaters, but they run too hot
for the milk, boiling it over. I have found cup warmers that are
supposed to keep a drink hot, but will not actually make it hot if it
starts off cold.
Is there an electric cup or gadget that I can mix up a cup of
chocolate milk and then heat it to a good temperature without it
boiling over?
I don't mind buying something online.

This is a possibility too. I have an electric cooler that includes a
cable that converts the plug, so I could probably use that. I actually
bought a mug last year that appeared to do this, but I learned after I
got it that it wouldn't actually heat it up, just kkep it warm. So,
these look like a much better version of that.
I actually take a small crock pot with me to shows so that I can have
a nice hot lunch at my vendor space. It works great. I've just never
mastered a hot drink. I've done a large mug of hot chocolate at the
hotel, only to have it cold by the time I get to the show hall.

The only electric kettle I have seen boiled the milk over too fast. I
can't always sit and watch it, especially if it has a lid on it.
We've used a kettle for heating water for soup and tea. But it didn't
work too well for milk. I would love a little kettle with a
temperature dial. That would be awesome. Or an electric thermos with a
way to control the temperature.

How about one of those miniature crock pots?
They are sold mainly for heating potporri, but I've also seen them at
the store for heating and serving hot dips.
I've seen those get hot enough to simmer things...

You can buy a beverage warmer at most any drug store. They are useful
for warming liquid medications that need to be taken warm. Just ask at
your local drug store. Amazon.com also sells them. Just google for
"beverage warmer" and you'll find lots of choices.

I just looked at amazon.com for beverage warmer, and they are mostly
pads that keep a drink warm. They don't take a cold drink and make it
hot.
I did see the immersion heater there, and I will try that one.

I suspect you can buy one for much less

Your criteria are kind of tough to meet, Kiddo. :-0)
My first thought, based on your first paragraph was one of the coil
heaters that you put into the liquid. Some are here (an Amazon search
link), http://tinyurl.com/y88hcqk
If the milk is boiling over, you simply need to take the danged thing
out before that happens. Which means you watch the pot so it doesn't
boil. :-0)
I can't see schlepping all that to a day-long conference, though. <=8^\
YMMV.
Most gas stations around here now offer a hot beverage bar where you can
concoct a flavored coffee or cappuccino or hot chocolate. One of those
foam cups with lid kept 16 ounces of my combo hot for 2 hours in the
car. If you don't like the idea of foam, consider a stainless
steel-lined thermal coffee "mug" like this:
http://www.starbucksstore.com/produc...asp?SKU=259649
They keep coffee hot for a long time if you pre-warm by pouring very hot
or boiling water into it and letting it sit for a couple minutes.
That's the best I can do for you. :-0)

When I travel I bring along my 4 cup electric perculator, it makes
coffee, or just heats liquids in minutes. I also used to have a
"munchkin" microwave oven, a 'compact'... was great for traveling, was
lightweight, small but large enough to accomodate a dinner plate. I
gave it to my daughter some 25 years ago to use at her college dorm. I
think it was a Sharp.

Those work well for water but in milk the milk burns onto the
coil very quickly and is almost impossible to clean off. I had
one in college and it was very disappointing. (And back in those
good old days they cost less than $5.)

Geez - I paid about 2 bucks for mine. 'Course, it goes back to the
Calley trial. Still works fine.

This is what you want:
http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/prod...1&SKU=11904270
Used one in college to heat canned soup, milk, water for tea, etc.
Simple solution to your problem.

That looks perfect... Now _I_ want one and I was not the OP! <lol>

I'm going to look for one of these at the local stores first. I have
not tried one, so this is probably my best option. I have tried water
pots in the past.

I'm not at conferences. I'm a photographer. I go to cat shows, horse
shows, and dogs shows. The horse shows and dogs shows are often
covered, but open and cold. The cat shows are usually better, though
some places have been cold all day, to the point that I am wearing a
shirt, sweatshirt, and coat. And still cold. They are all day events,
can't leave. So, once I am there at 7 or 8am, I don't get to leave
until 3-6pm.

I can't stand coffee or lame powdered hot chocolate mixes. I don't
like white milk, so I use a LOT of chocolate syrup to make the milk
dark brown. It really does look like coffee by the time I'm done with
it. I can't see paying $2-3 for a cup of hot chocolate, when I can
take a quart of milk and a bottle of syrup with me. It's cheaper, and
tastes a lot better.

Darn. Glad you told me that before I bought it.

I tried one like this, but it's so huge, compared to one cup at a
time. I kept burning it. I wish they made a smaller one. Then it would
be perfect.
