"The pit bull later died"
Choked on a poodle?
It took the police 13 shots to get a Great Dane over here. Perhaps
the Melbourne police have a budget for bullets?

Or at least a tire iron to the back of it's skull...
One reason to at least carry pepper spray on walks.

"Police did not shoot the dog, she said, but she confirmed that the dog
died at the scene after paramedics used "their resources'' to assist police
in freeing the man."
Hence the OD reference :-)

I don't even think pepper spray would have worked with this mutt.
Cops on scene for 20 mins trying to get the mutt off?? They would have used
spray.
Trouble is there are so many bleeding heart doogooders on site watching,
you really have to think of *them* before you act.
*That* sucks.
Now, if the mutt was latched onto one of *them*, it'd be a different story.
I don't carry spray, or a gun, but I do carry a rather sharp knife.
If a mutt like that was so intent on not letting go, it probaly wouldn't
notice me cutting it's throat.

My next door neighbour had a German Shepherd and two pit bulls and they
were both pit bulls were quite friendly. When my wife and I walked our
two dogs the the neighbour's dogs usually came with us. All five
(neutered males) got along great.
The younger pit bull used to come over to visit me when I was out in the
yard. He loved to play. One day I tried to teach him to shake a paw. I
made the mistake of reaching for his paw and picking it up. He snapped
at me. When my neighbour moved he tried to talk me into taking the
younger one because he couldn't have two dogs at the new place. Two dogs
were more than enough, and I couldn't help but think about how he had
suddenly snapped at me.
