Go for Agent, it filters according to emai addy, key words, or the
posters name. It also can filter just the one newsgroup or globally.

On a Windows machine? Any of them, using Nfilter as a proxy to do
the filtering. (note, it hasn't been maintained in several years)

And for those who tend to forget to look at the newsgroups line to see
how many groups they are replying to, it has a popup warning of a
multiple group reply - so you choose to reply to more than one group
(which you can edit) or just to the group you are reading.

You also need a degree in computer science to be able to operate it.

May I suggest simply not reading Usenet?

I don't have a degree in computer science, although I have taught
classes in it. My news client has very sophisticated filtering. I
don't know how to use it. With my background, I'm sure I could figure
it out and be a pro, but my news client also has very simple filtering,
and that does everything I need. Five minutes to set up a default
profile, and then it's a right click and hit the return 99% of the time.
When I need a little more, it's a few seconds of clicking and typing.

[I use a Mac, so I can't help Mike with specifics]

    i like 40tude dialog:

    <http://www.40tude.com/dialog/>

    <http://dialog.datalist.org/downloads/download.html>

sqwertz said (i think) that you can filter words within messages, but i
haven't done so. i'm pretty certain it has more comprehensive filtering
than thunderbird, certainly than windows mail.

i liked agent when i used it, too, but it went nuts one day and i couldn't
get it working right after that.

I like Agent too. It is getting more and more powerful with each
    version.

And I find it fairly easy to use.

My newsreader is Thunderbird and the message filter works great.

    Hamster <http://www.arcorhome.de/newshamster/tgl/misc/hamster_en.html>
is another option. Also hasn't been maintained in years but it's been
reliable for years so it doesn't really need any.

I've never come across a newsreader that can filter out words within the
    message.

Which is why Ag7ent sucks at filtering.

40tude Dialog has the best filtering. Along with Hamster.

From that sentence structure it appears peedmont can't read very well
But a high degree of reading proficiency and/or filtering software is
not necessary if one has a backbone... simply restrain from clicking
on the topics/posters you choose not to read. With my newsreader I
can filter 'bout anything but I don't filter at all except with my own
brain and fortitude. To my knowledge all newsreaders display the
thread, and when opened display the posters... I don't open threads I
don't want to read and I don't open posts from posters I don't want to
read... and when it's a new thread and I open it to find eight of the
ten posts are from the mick moron I simply delete the entire thread
unread and make a mental note not to open that thread again. Only a
mental weaklink needs to have usenet made child proof.
