Default OT: Importing (non-food items)

If anyone knows anything about how to do this and the ins and outs,
please e-mail me privately. Believe me, I've done LOTS of googling and
made a lot of phone calls. Government red tape is a royal pain in the
ass... and I still don't know what I need to do!

Like I asked, please take it to private e-mail.
I really mean it this time too.

It seems what she wants to import is private and not for open
discussion here, we should cut her some slack.

Because it really is real business and might mean my ultimate survival
since I've become a statistic in the unemployement line and very much
off topic. I get bitched at for starting off topic subjects even tho'
it's no longer a frequent habit. I don't wish to discuss it here, but
I've learned over time that there are a large number of people here with
diverse experiences that have been helpful to me and others in the past.
I'm not afraid to ask for help. :-)

Thanks for understanding sweetie. <smootch>
And for the really nosy, it's a medical textile item. Nothing horribly
exotic...

I don't know anything about importing for resale. (Other than the
folks who run an import stuff try to order enough at once to fill a
freight container.) But ordering stuff from Canada, or Amazon in the
UK or Germany, is pretty simple. Your credit card company converts the
currency and adds a fee. We haven't had to pay duty on the books we've
ordered. But I believe dutiable stuff comes though the mail, and you
have to pay duty before you can claim it. My wife once even wrote a
check to an outfit in England, and it was cashed OK.

If that's the case, you may find the import duty to be nasty. If I
import something sold in the US to Canada, I get whacked nasty if it's
not manufactured in Mexico or the USA. China seems to bring out the
worst in our governments when importing from there.

How bad is it, if you don't mind me asking? That will add to my
per-item cost and I'm trying to estimate it at the moment. Do they
charge by weight or by item?

I understand that if the purchase is under $2,500 for the box, I don't
need the import license? I just need to get the supplier to cooperate.

It was $2000 for me (3070 pieces)and they held up my shipment for
almost a month. I never did find if it was the pieces or amount, they
had me jumping from one office to another for weeks getting clearance
documents. Make sure the shippers documents are in order, or you may
suffer the same fate. (
I changed manufacturers, and last shipment was fine.

Damn. I may need to reconsider my warehousing and initial investment if
it works out.

> I never did find if it was the pieces or amount, they

I finally talked to an importing broker this morning and he gave me a
lot of info. And warned me to check also with the FDA as it is a medical
item. I'm still checking that aspect. Looks like I do not need any
special license to import tho' which was my main worry.

> Make sure the shippers documents are in order, or you may

Good hint, thanks! I have a line right now on two different importers.

Thanks again. :-) I truly do appreciate it. I want to look at all
possibilities before I run out of resources...

I still need to find more buyers but have 2 at the moment. With this
particular product tho' and my own personal experience with it, I don't
anticipate a lack of customers. It will just need some footwork on my
part locally, and I can do that. And the two buyers are part of 5
clinics with more contacts.

You gotta start somewhere! Maybe it'll work, maybe it won't. I'm
optimistic as I know what it has done for me personally.

If you are interested in sharing a shipment and branching out, this
e-mail works and I'm willing to share. At this point tho', a LOT will
depend on the quality of the professional sample that I should be
getting shortly and how it tests out. The PT and the Chiro' are both
willing to try it on patients, and it is at MY risk only! And I'll also
be testing it personally. It has been one of two items keeping me off
of pain killers for the past 6 months.

There is more to it than that, but I really don't want to go into detail.
I was not fired. I resigned under duress.

Thanks for caring hon'. <hugs>

I know every single one of my co-workers are pissed off about it (got a
call from one of them) and my main night shift co-worker resigned two
days later. Conditions are bad there right now. There are 5 openings and
people that do NOT want to work night shift are being forced to.

It's a bad situation and I really truly do feel bad for the rest of
them. It is a very very hostile work environment at this time. And that
is what I'm using on my applications.

They said that we were only at 85% "productivity" and we had too many
people. It made him look good to get rid of people. I'd been there a
VERY long time and could be replaced for about $10.00 per hour less.
And it's easy to find excuses to get rid of people. Everybody is human
and make minor errors.

I was there for 22 and 1/2 years.
They sold the company that I worked for 2 years ago. It was inevitable.
Am I bitter? Hell yes!

But I will land on my feet. I have more pride than that.

Just one of many.
It's embarrassing.

That is due to good import brokers. I found one this morning...

And he was helpful enough, I'm willing to share who he is. :-)

E-mail me if you want his details. I will not post them.
