Now I'm in for it....
I have to cook a special-occasion dinner for two couples. It turns out
they're bringing their kids, so now it's a dinner for 6. I don't think
the kids have had a lot of exposure to sophisticated food. OTOH, I
hate going to the trouble of a five-course meal centered on spaghetti
with meat sauce. I'm thinking fresh fish, some nice homemade rolls, a
couple of veggies, salad or soup, and maybe H-D ice cream with
cookies. Any thoughts on pleasing kids as well as adults?

Get McDonald's for the kids.

I have a suggestion that's sure to please everyone. Die a slow, painful death.

I wouldn't waste much time on Middiot's post. He will no doubt get nasty and
snarky on his would-be guests, who will decide he's just too mean spirited
to be good company for their kids. Most likely they have promised the kids
dinner out already, so instead of just staying home they will take them to
Chuckee Cheese, where they will enjoy a better prepared meal than they would
get from Middiot, although the show might seem familiar.
Just sayin'.

Serve your usual P&J sandwiches. Anyway it's patently obvious you
posted this so folks would think you have a life.

My condolences. Spaghetti sounds good. Just make sure you make it kinda
bland. I'd make little hand held meat pies for those critters and the
adults. The kids ain't gonna like fish or veggies. It's not a good idea
to serve soup to kids. That's my feeling. They don't need to eat a bunch
of things. Ice cream is always good but don't knock yourself out about
it. They're just savages anyway.

Pretty much, but I have the rest of the week to plan, so I said OK.

I never force people to dine outside my own religion.

The kids are too old for PBJ. I assume you're imagining your siblings'
dead children.

Re: Now I'm in for it....
Keep it simple, e.g. comfort food. Meatloaf you can do ahead, reheat, dump on some sauce. Mashed spuds, a garden salad. I wouldn't knock myself out - they might not appreciate it. I mean the adults!!

Tell us what the occasion is and maybe you can get some better input.
Is it a double divorce, a new wife swapping deal, a death....WTF!!!!

Feed them the same meal and "expose them to more sophisticated food."
It's never too young to start. If they don't like it, screw em!
Regardless they will love the dessert...ice cream and cookies.

Yeah...so McD is not good food for anyone here but it's ok for someone's
kids?
Feed the kids the main meal.

Tell them what you plan to serve and serve that. Let the parents decide
whether to feed the kids elsewhere first or bring something along for them.
That's their problem, not yours. You are the nice one inviting them to
dinner in the first place. Screw the kids.

I agree. I just helped at a church dinner, simple pasta with meat sauce,
etc. First thing someone comes in the kitchen and says there are some kids
that don't want the meat sauce they just want butter on their pasta. I
said, nice and loud, "so what the hell are they doing here?"

how old are the kids? How intelligent are the adults? You can't please
everyone, and sometimes you can't please anyone.

Yeah. Not only did I not like McDonald's as a kid, I would have been very
insulted if someone gave that to me!
