    Default new kitchen gadget!

I just got a big box from Amazon.com.

    I wanted a Back-to-Basics microwave popping bowl.
When I went to order it it came with the Super Saver
Free Shipping on orders of $25 or more so I figured
there were a few more things I needed. I also ordered
    a silicon pastry/basting brush and a small serrated-blade
knife (4.5" blade) and some new cooling racks. The ones
I have were really cheap and they're falling apart. The
small serrated knife I had, and used for almost everything,
died. Also I had killed my pastry brush. I had never
had a microwave popping bowl before but this one was
recommend by Cook's Illustrated so I got it.

I have an electric popper but it's a pain to get it out and
it's too big to leave out as I don't make popcorn all that
often. I hate the microwave popcorn in the bags because you
can't get plain unsalted popcorn. Otherwise they're great
and very convenient. But I like my popcorn unsalted and with
real butter on it. Thus the new microwave popping bowl.
It's really cool. Can't wait to try it out.

The pastry brush has an angled head so that when you lay it
down the bristle don't touch the table/counter and get it all
    messy. Cool.

The cooling racks are really neat with wires going in both
    directions making a 1/2" square grid. And it's non-stick,
coated in something black. Looks really neat. And very
    sturdy. Cool.

The knife is not that exciting. I hope I like it as well
as my previous one. It's so hard to find the right kind of
knife. My favorite knives have all been small serrated knives
that I bought for a couple of bucks at the supermarket but
you can never seem to find the same thing twice. I guess
    they quit making them. Sigh!

Yup, you can. Try Paul Newman's "Pop's Corn." Unsalted and pretty much
fat free, you can add your own melted butter.

    Otherwise they're great

We've had one for years, uses the little circular popping pads that are
replaceable. Can't remember the name of it offhand. Pops corn pretty
    good too.

    I like that.

Bought one at Bed, Bath, and Beyond a few years ago, really nice for
    cooling down cookies, etc.

Color me jealous. :-) Amazon splurges like that can be a lot of fun!
