Default Memphis in May site flooded

by Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue
Cooking Contest on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at
    3:02pm

Memphis in May officials are conferring regularly
with appropriate agencies to keep abreast of the
concerns for potential flooding in Tom Lee Park.
The agencies include the Emergency Management
Agency, National Weather Service, and U. S. Army
Corp of Engineers. The Beale Street Music Festival
will not be affected by the flooding occurring
    around the Mid-South area.

However, the prediction that the river will crest
at record levels around May 8, 2011 does cause
concern for the World Championship Barbecue
Cooking Contest. The Festival has contingency
plans in place for certain emergent issues and is
reviewing and analyzing all reports and forecasts
and continuing to maintain vigilant contact with
local authorities. An appropriate and expedient
plan for the event will be announced when all
known factors have been carefully reviewed. At
present, we are planning for another exciting and
    successful World Championship Barbecue Cooking
    Contest.

    -

When pressed to elaborate if they'd lean toward
relocation or rescheduling in the event of
flooding, they simply responded that they're
    considering all options.

Your subject line is incorrect. I'm still in touch with a former co-worker
who has been on a winning MIM bbq team for the last 20 years. I asked her
about the officials being worried about flooding. They're not worried about
it. Today was sunny in downtown Memphis on Tom Lee Park. I'm not saying
there isn't the possibility of flooding but it hasn't happened yet.

I'm surprised to hear that. . .I had read that the organizers were
conferring with the Corps of Engineers and all kinds of officialdom to
see what could be done to reduce the water. I also thought I read
that there was an alternate site planned. Glad to hear that things
    are going better.

"If it keep on rainin'..." http://www.keeponliving.at/song/when...ee_breaks.html
    (recorded in 1929)

They're going to blow out the Bird's Point Levee and flood a bunch of
Missouri farmland to keep the waters from topping the Cairo, Illinois
levee. All that water's going to eventually go down to Memphis, but
from what I've gathered, West Memphis, Arkansas will get it a lot
worse that Memphis, Tennessee. The worst of this stuff--other than
that one tornado--has been staying just south of St. Louis. This is a
nasty bunch of stuff, and while you can't blame any single event on
climate change, these events are very likely to increase in intensity
and frequency as the planet becomes warmer and wetter. You can see
    here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mississippi_Alluvial_Plain
that Tennessee is on the high side of the river. For those
