July 4th
What are folks planing to cook for the 4th of July?
I'm planning on Chinese style spare ribs and shrimp yatka mein.

Dunno, either I'm going out with friends somewhere, or else I'll fire up
the smoker and do a couple racks of ribs.

I was wondering when people would start to discuss their 4th plans..
So far, my adopted family here in town is coming over for our usual
4th celebration.
I am thinking grilled tri-tip...fixed according to a Russ Parsons
recipe which I really like.
For some reason, I am really stymied on the rest of the meal this
year. Since I am personally trying to eat healthier these days, I am
also thinking about getting some veggies to put on the grill as well.
I have been perusing my cookbooks, trying to see if I want to have
various salads along with the tri-tip. Maybe a couscous salad...maybe
the barley salad that was mentioned here.... Nothing has gelled yet,
so I am still looking. I want most stuff done in advance, except for
the grilling...
Dessert is up in the air too right now. I have some puff pastry in the
freezer that needs to be used, so might make a galette, or tart with
summer fruit. Thinking about ice cream as well....
Last year, we had pulled pork bbq, from a pork butt smoked in the
Weber Bullet. Had the usual fixings...like baked beans, coleslaw,
etc. I am not much in the mood for that this year, but I have run
across some recipes for blue cheese coleslaw lately. That sounds
intriguing, and might be a good match for the tri-tip....
I look forward to hearing the ideas of others, as maybe something will
start to gel for me...regarding my own menu..LOL

I have a hunk of beef round that I'll probably put in the smoker. Aside
from that, no idea yet.

We'll probably do burgers and brats with the usual sides. No specaial
plans this year so far. Gak... I'm already tired of cole slaw and
potato salad and it's just the beginning of July. Well, almost.

The plan is to meet up at the Battleship New Jersey to climb all around it
with the cousins and their knee-biters. Then, be held captive at their place
with an almost never-ending supply of BBQ grilled chicken parts and corn and
apple pie and stuff.
And again subject to "Jump on Uncle Andy! You'll bounce really high!" loving
torture. And my stomach makes a good pillow when they're finally sapped of
kid-strength.

You do have to admit that the idea of getting laid as a special
occasion is kind of depressing.
My 4th? I'm working a double shift. The church is having a big BBQ
with bluegrass music, an outdoor evening service, and one of those
inflatable things the kids jump around in. Unfortunately, the rain
chance is looking like 40%. I'm maling a special contribution to the
event. I'm bringing my misting fan. Check this out:

It's attached to a 28"? air circulator, but if you get one of those
huge fans, you can put on an 8 nozzle one and cool a huge area.

You mean get a huge area WET!
Of course, the effectiveness of misters is greatly dependent on the
relative humidity. In Arizona they would be great, but a few days ago
here in STL they would be almost worthless.
I prefer cool showers! Or best, a clear cool swimming hole nearby! ;-)

My neighbor has one of those gizmos and swears by it. I haven't seen it
yet but I've been invited down for a look see. The heat is the one thing
that will keep me inside. I hate the really hot days. My question would
be what happens on our really hot, HUMID, St. Louis days? Does it add
moisture to the air? My neighbor's response to the questions were, "I
don't know where the water goes".

Of course it adds moisture to the air. That's where the water goes, it
evaporates. And consequently, it's less effective as the relative
humidity goes up, because less of the water evaporates.

We're having some friends over so I am Smoking a couple racks of ribs, a some turkey legs, and some salmon. For side dishes making some potato salad, cole slaw, and for dessert I am trying to decide between making Raspberry Sorbet, and vanilla ice cream or a cake. LOL

Funnel cakes. We're scheduled to set up our funnel cake trailer at
a wine/beer/music festival on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and I'll be
cooking funnel cakes all day on the 4th and 5th. On the other hand,
as vendors we get free admission and glasses to get samples from
all the wine and beer folks. I'm sure the BBQ place will have their
setup there, and there will be other food vendors, so we'll have
some good food.
Best of all, Buckwheat Zydeco will be playing on Saturday evening.
I may get to smoke something at home on the 3rd. Depends on whether
both daughters and their husbands come in on Friday, and if I have
time what with other things going on.

No cooking. Our neighborhood of 200 houses always has a 4th of July
picnic at the park around our small lake. 25 years ago the officers
of the HOA did the grilling, a neighbor who was a VP at the Coors
brewery supplied kegs and soda and the menu was simple--hot dogs,
hamburgers, and watermelon plus salads contributed by neighbors.
The picnic was free.
Today the food is provided at a minimal cost by a neighbor who is a
caterer. He provides hot dogs, burgers, grilled chicken and BBQ beef
plus soda, salads, chips and fruit salad. Neighbors provide dessert in
the form of decorated "patriotic" cakes which are judged , and other sweets.
Before lunch there is a kids' decorated bike, doll carriage, roller
blades, scooter, etc. parade around the main oval street followed by
a flag raising ceremony.
Turnout isn't always what it used to be since many people have family
obligations elsewhere and quite a few of the neighbors are older and
can't stand the heat of the day. It is always a good way to catch up
with old friends and meet people new to the neighborhood over the
previous winter. New babies, new spouses...you never know who you're
going to meet. ;-)
