I only fairly recently - last winter, I guess - noticed that Robert
Newton, the best-known Long John Silver because of his TV and movie roles,
did draw out terminal "ar" sounds (and maybe internal ones; I don't
remember) in words. I was used to the interjection, "arrr". But not until
my buddy and I watched some of his old stuff on a DVDs we rented did I
notice the habit with respect to worrrds. He'd definitely say
"calandarrr.'
