Default Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)

The original black and white version, not colorized. It still holds
up after all these years :-)

Dana Wynter was *so* beautiful...and it always slays me to see Richard
Deacon in most any film (he had a tiny bit part as a druggist in _Hud_, this
was after he had some success on -The Dick Van Dyke Show_, etc....). IIRC
Virginia Christine, who was later famous as "Mrs. Olson" in those 60's
Folger's Coffee commercials is also in there. It is an excellent film,
fast - paced and thrilling...

Great movie of course.

Mel Cooley! I knew I'd seen him before somewhere.

BTW, the ending (and to a lesser extent the first scene) didn't seem
to fit the rest of the movie. I'll bet it was *supposed* to end
when he looked right at the camera in the running-on-the-highway
scene. "They're here already. You're Next!!" [fade to black] :-)
Then some bigwig decided it needed a less disturbing ending...

The classic sci-fi of that era are way better than the new, improved
versions. We went to the Imax last Christmas Day to see The Day the Earth
Stood Still, as the original movie is my husband's favorite -- what a
disappointment. And the new War of the Worlds (my favorite) is bad too. I
think the story telling is left behind in favor of special effects.

I can't believe they re - made those two classic films and with SO MUCH
MONEY they did a "botch" job...

Both of those in their original forms are two "perfect" movies in my book:
fast - paced, thrilling, excellent characterizations and plotting,
continuity, etc. there are moments of fine special FX in the 2005 _WOTW,
especially the scary "tripods", but the originals' FX are still excellent.
It's amazing especially that the '53 _War of the Worlds_ still stands up
against any CGI krap that is produced today...but then George Pal was a
genius, he later received a Special Effects Oscar for 1960's _The Time
Machine_...

And if anyone DARES to do a re - make of _Forbidden Planet_ I think I'm
going to *shoot* someone, lol...

I was just going to say that the Forbidden Planet stands out as having fine
special effects, characters, sound effects and story. Let's hope that
someone doesn't decide to mess that fine movie up.

heh....

I've always considered the 50s to be the golden age of sci-fi movies.
Who can forget This Island Earth, Invaders From Mars, Target Earth, 20
Million Miles to Earth, Enemy from Space (Quatermass series), to name
just a tiny few. Man, they could make 'em! Better still, they all
hit the ever increasing number of UHF networks in the early 60s. I
could tune in to 4-5 channels, all showing these old classics, almost
every Sat night. The Crawling Eye, I Married a Monster From Outer
Space, Tarantula, etc. We practically burned off the contacts on that
old Sylvania channel selector knob.

I haven't seen a single remake worth spit.

I have a video of Forbidden Planet, now if I can just find my Betamax
machine. <G>

I really do need to take that machine out of my electronics storage
closet and clean it up. I've got a ton of science fiction videos in Beta
format, which incidentally, is much better than VHS. Guess I could get
them recorded on DVD nowadays though. Some of the tapes go back to about
1981.

I recall Dana was a beauty in "Sink the Bismark" too - not a bad film,
by the way.

Deacon also played the part of Fred Rutherford in "Leave it to
Beaver". Darn - how did June manage to look so perfect and always
serve a big meal in the dining room?

Don't think so, unless you have an older recording machine. I tried last
winter to record my VHS to DVD and the machine rejected them all by virtue
of them having a copyright. That will catch just about anything. I've got
some good stuff -- The Crawling Eye and The Giant Claw, to name a few. 'o}

I have all of those except the Quatermass series. Friday and Saturday
nights we had to wait for the atmosphere to clear so that we could pick up
better signals so that we could get those movies. Generally some guy
dressed like a monster would pop up out of a coffin. Saturday mornings were
for Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers and Sky King.

She was also in the movie "The List of Adrian Messenger." Two more
tidbits, she pronounces her name as 'Donna' and not Dana and Carolyn
Jones played in "The Body Snatchers." She and her husband had one of
the pods in their greenhouse and watched it as it took on her husbands
features. Miss Jones was 'Morticia' in the "Adams Family" and the ex-
wife of the late Aaron Spelling.

I agree, all the remakes are always crummy. I guess they think they
have these huge budgets and special effects so of course it's going to
be a m-u-c-h better movie. NOT.

Bingo!

I tossed my bottle and bowl of pablum in favor of cliffhangers with
Buster Crabbe battling the Clay People and Ming the Merciless. Don't
forget Captain Midnight and Commando Cody. Ol' Gene Autry even did a
couple very strange scifi serials (Phantom Empire) with some of the
worst special effects in the history of cinema.

It can be done. Even versions of Linux will not include the key
applications for fear of lawsuits, but being able to do what you want
is a Linux strongpoint. Get a good DVD player and Linux and dwnld a
free copy of DeCSS. Not exactly click and copy, requiring some system
configuration, but its very possible. In fact, it's pretty much
impossible to prevent it. You jes need to learn how. (I don't know)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DeCSS

Also, keep an eye out for rogue Windows software. I recall one
application (Xcopy?) that survived on the market for a couple years
before the cartels sued it into dust.

I have a Walmart DVR that someone wrote a firmware patch for to
disable Macrovision. I downloaded the firmware and installed it,
and I use it to copy VHS to DVD occasionally (but usually it works
better to just buy a used copy of the DVD)

Xcopy still exists in Europe. I still get emails from them.
