    Default Information Required TONKA BEANS

    Just read this article by Scott Ellis ( a rural reporter in oz)

    Not had any thing to do with these beans .
    Are they banned in the USA and what (if any) personal experience have
    any of you had with this bean .

    Now, thanks to MasterChef, the hit reality TV show that has launched a
    thousand food crazes, tonka beans are walking out of gourmet stores too.

    Native to South America, the beans have a strong, bitter almond flavour
    and can be used in sweet and savoury dishes in a similar way to vanilla
    beans.

    But tonka beans can be dangerous - even fatal - if consumed in the wrong
    manner, or in too high a quantity.

    The beans featured in a dessert recipe last Monday on the Channel Ten
    series, which consistently attracts about 1.5 million viewers, six
    nights a week.

    Sydney pastry chef Adriano Zumbo, who created the panna cotta recipe,
    said tonka beans, which are banned in the United States, had to be
    treated with respect.

    "(The tonka bean) contains something called coumarin, which is an
    anticoagulant and in high doses it thins out the blood to the point
    where it is dangerous," Zumbo said.

    "But we are talking high doses here you'd have to eat a lot of them
    for it to be a problem and we use about a quarter of a single bean in
    any recipe.

    "So stick to the recipe, don't go off chewing on them. You only need to
    shave a little bit of it in."

    Lydia Buchtmann, spokeswoman for Food Standards Australia New Zealand,
    said tonka beans were safe to eat if cooked, but should not be eaten raw
    or ground into powder. She advised parents to keep the beans, which pose
    a choking hazard, out of the reach of children.

    Food importer Philippe Reboul said in South America keeping a few beans
    in one's pocket or wallet is thought to bring good luck.

    Tonka beans are available in the US but not for food use. Rather for
    potpourri and 'magical' uses.

    Here is some info on tonka beans being used as adulterants in Mexican
    vanilla extracts:

    I buy Mexican vanilla in Mexico. I read that link and got a little
    worried. DH takes coumadin. I ran to the fridge to look at my bottle and
    right there was a label that said it was pure vanilla and did not
    contain coumarin.

    FWIW, it's the Danncy brand with the rooster on the label. I have never
    used any of the other brands.

    I would hate to give up on Mexican vanilla. It has such a distinctly
    wonderful flavor.

    This discussion seems to pop up fairly often, although not as often as
    how to peel boiled eggs. :-P If the Mexican vanilla is cheap, it is
    probably not real, genuine vanilla. I have seen large bottles in Mexico
    selling for $2, and I would bet that is not real vanilla. I usually pay
    at least $5 for a small bottle. I love Mexican vanilla.

    If it says pure vanilla fine. Avoid vanilla that doesn't list
    ingredients at all.
