Why is Horatio putting on his sunglasses when he is already wearing
sunglasses? (or is he taking off a pair?)

I think that is part of the spoofing in the cartoons. I've seen several
of them, all have the same general theme, and he usually cycles through
wearing his glasses :-) All of them are funny cause they're all true to
form as to how he speaks and acts. I like the series, but the cartoons
    are funny.

Maybe they lifted it from "Airplane!" where Robert Stacks' serious
character shows up at the airport in uniform and removes his sunglasses
only to be wearing a pair underneath?

On "The Soup," the host spoofs Horatio in the same manner, often wearing
several pairs of sunglasses at a time.

That is one of DH's favorite movies. How many times can somone watch the
same movie and laugh? DH will say "hundreds"

Sounds right. Robert Stacks character name popped into my mind on the
way home. It was "Rex Cramer". I have played that movie on occasion for
people who had never seen it and it cracks them up. Good humor is timeless.

Robert Stack was not only a good actor he was an Olympic skeet shooter.
He competed in many skeet shoots over his lifetime and did well. I had
the honor of meeting him at one in Houston many years ago, he was very
much the gentleman and seemed easily approachable.

When I saw "Airplane" in the theater, I was with a Jewish friend.
When the El Al plane (complete with peyot and yarmulka) taxied out on
the runway, nobody in the entire theater even giggled - except the two
    of us!

    Why not?
It would have been funnier if Caine had been portrayed standing
sideways, as the character does more often then not.

I agree, but they would have needed the extra photo snap of him being
sideways, taking off his sun glasses, and saying something prosaic like
    "I guess he couldn't wait".

    Lol.

If I ever have the opportunity to indulge in the fruit of the above
mentioned cactus, I'll cover my head in reverence. It is supposed to
    be a spiritual experience, right?

Very true. Shame the character has lapsed into such a stereotype.
