I'd thought you'd be all over this like white (in your case, brown) on rice.

All I know is that, back in the early-70's, when I was in the natural
foods business in Southern California, all the macrobiotic diet
followers I ran into were the unhealthiest, most emaciated, looking
people I knew.

Miso soup has lots of recipes depending on what sorts of vegetables you
use and how long you need to cook them.
I make it with hon dashi (powdered bonito stock), and a little soy sauce
and vinegar. I would add a little thinly sliced onion and perhaps some
shredded cabbage or bok choy. The miso is stirred up with a little of
the soup, added and heated just to boiling; don't boil.
The Hawaiian state dish Saimin is a variation on miso soup with lots of
noodles and things like sliced ham and shrimps.
There's all sorts of unlikely folk lore about miso, including a man
similar to your author who claims it is a cure for radiation poisoning!

That's what I remember also. Except, there's a reason. Those
unhealthy, sick people were following a macrobiotic diet because people
told them it would cure their ills.
