Heart cake
This is the first cake I've baked in my new oven. I can't believe how
TALL it came out for only 2 layers!
I'm going to decorate it later tonight and use some strawberries,
raspberries and icing. It's a red velvet cake with buttercream icing
and some strawberry preserves between the layers.

Bring some over here. Red Velvet with buttercream icing is my favorite
cake. I've never had the strawberry preserves incorporated, but I can't
think of a reason why that'd be a bad thing.
How 'bout presenting a picture of the decorated cake when done. That way
I can show my wife what romantic people do for each other on Valentine's
Day.

I used to bake heart shaped cakes all the time when I was a kid. Really
easy with one square and one round pan. I only ever made one that was two
layers. I made that as an adult for a bridal shower. It was orange
flavored and the icing was pale peach colored. I put icing roses on it in
a slightly darker peach color. People loved the flavor. I used fresh
squeezed orange juice and orange zest. I used to bake cakes all the time.
I had people order them from me. They ordered chocolates too. I used to do
painted ones.

LOL! I will take pics. This is actually for my team at work. We're
working tonight later so during the time I don't have to do my part I'm
going to decorate. It will keep me awake, plus I haven't decorated a
cake in a while, and my team is awesome and deserves it.
I was a little worried about the strawberry bleeding out between the
layers, but I added a piping of a ridge around the edges before putting
it in and putting the top layer on. The outer frosting is starting to
dry and it hasn't bled so I think it's fine. I hate the pan I covered
to present it in, but it has to go on an hour drive to work tomorrow.

Congrats on the cake - and the oven. I used to have a heart shaped pan.
I got it sometime in the 70s and we have a lot of memories associated
with it. It's two hearts joined together. I may have dumped it but if I
can find it, I'll bake a cake with it tonight. The wife will be pleased.

You just need a square pan and a patching diameter round pan. Just cut the
round cake in half and attach one to either side of the square cake.

Of course. Valentines is right to St Patricks day.
So what's on the other side of blue, red? (for the Fourth of July).

Is that just wrapping paper and are you sure it's food safe?

Thanks Polly!
Work conference call tonight is interfering with decorating it. At this
rate it will be hours before I can finish. LOL I already made the
decorating frosting.
I'm macerating the rest of the fruit with a little sugar to serve on the
side with some whipped cream. I'm sure that isn't standard with a Red
Velvet cake but I want to use up the rest of what I bought for it.

I used a heart shaped pan. I had a whole lot of different cake pans in
different shapes and sizes when I used to sell cakes, but recently gave
them away to the babysitter of my niece's baby. I just don't do many
cakes anymore. I had to keep the hearts because I love everything heart.

Don't try to figure it out. It's just what women do. I don't
understand it but I do like the fact that they're different than me.

Warming up for the Big Day already, are you? Valium helps.
Don't forgot to drop a few hints about March 14th.
