Default Food You Hated As A Kid, But Like Now?

I don't know about you, but for sure my taste buds have changed from
when I was a kid until now in the "golden years" of my life. Whenever my
mother would fix carrot salad, I thought for sure she was trying to
punish me (LOL) and now it's the first thing I go for on a salad bar! I
also didn't like coleslaw very much, absolutely hated squash, and now I
really like both. In fact, squash is my most favorite veggie of all. I
like to cube it up, sprinkle it with salt and pepper, brown sugar and
put pats of butter on top and bake it...yum! I also didn't like my
mother's spaghetti, as she always stirred grated cheese into it and I
like just Parmesan cheese sprinkled on top. I could eat spaghetti every
day of the week, I think!

As a kid I loved hotdogs, Bologna, liverwurst and salami and think they
taste so 'blah' and "mealy" anymore.

Have your tastes changed over the years too? I like to think mine have
    gotten more refined!

    Hi Judy,

I ate fried boloney just about every day as a kid. And steakums. (my gf was
impressed how many I could eat, still talks about.)... And in college would
eat a Big Mac, and a quarter pounder-- the same meal. (How did I do that?
And still be 170lbs. (stress relief. I eat to relieve stress.)... Now
veggie going on 20 years. (lacto-ovo but haven't had ovo since got the
cholesterol results back couple months ago...

Hope I earned some karma points by going veggie... TJ talks about the
squirrel... One the other Side, I hope there's not a bunch of cows waiting
    for me at the Gates.

Nope, if I didn't like it then I don't like it now. I've never
understood the point of saying something is an acquired taste. If I
don't like something the instant I put it in my mouth I'm certainly
not going to keep eating it.

    Anything green.

When I was about 17, I attended a banquet with other teens and when they served the salad to everyone, I was embarrassed into trying it. Hey - not bad!!

What's the use of watching what you eat if you're ****faced 20 hours
    out of every day?

Well actually it all works together. I just make sure I drink heavily enough
that I have to blow chunks several times a day, so it's effectively the same
result as anorexia. But you are correct that I watch what I eat... I watch
it floating in the commode after I hurl.

I think this is why I can't reconcile with my girlfriend who says I have
permanent vomit breath. But that's not true, because I brush my teeth two or
three times a week, and when I can afford it, I buy the good floss. I just
don't think she will ever want me back and it's just another excuse to avoid
    working things out.

I had a good friend that had not eaten a salad till 21. One day we went out
for dinner and he told me... He felt adventurous and got one-- said: "this
is good!" ...How can you be 21 and never have had a salad?? (I think he
was serious-- he seemed genuinely surprised to like it.)

A few months ago, went with my dad and family to a Mexican restaurant. He
said it was the first burrito he had ever had... He's 88... I can't
    imagine a life without burritos.

    I'm over 40 and I don't eat salads. I tried a bite of one once when I
was a kid and I never went back. With salads, each component just
    makes it worse and worse.

At about six-years old, I remember hating any wine or beer, any cheese,
brussels sprouts, cabbage, turnip. All but turnip I began steadily to
like more and more as a teenager. The liking for brassicae came when I
had them cooked properly not boiled to death.

Taste changes as we age. The biggest change for me happened when I grew
up, becamse an adult and started liking nearly all vegetables.
Tolerance for bitter increases and preference for sweet decreases.

Does not take into ac**** the reality of what happens as we age.

Depends on whether you recalibrate by trying it again years later. If
you don't you're a picky eater who is eating by memory not by your own
    senses.

I like lettuce-- but there is no law that says a salad has to have
    lettuce.

[and to the OP-- blue cheese comes to mind]

I was an unusual child as far as food was concerned.

I loved spinach, broccoli, and brussels sprouts and still do.
Same with most veggies other than cauliflower.

I don't particularly like lima beans or peas, but can eat them.

I also liked pepper, and like it more now, but not ANY kind of
    bell peppers.

I hate liver, but most other meats are fine.

I have no idea what a burrito is, although I have heard of the Burrito

A steak burrito at a taqueria in Chicago or Dallas can't help but be
wonderful, and I gather that the same is true for S. Cali. You can
always ask them to leave out any ingredient. I strongly dislike
cilantro, and detest green onions, but very few places put those on
burritos, even if they do put them on tacos or tostadas. I'm not
crazy about flour tortillas, and for that one reason, generally choose
tacos (soft corn tortilla) or tostadas.
