Default Ethnic Food-What Do You Like The Most? Least?

Since I'm a "newbie" to this group, I'm not sure what all has been
discussed in the past, so forgive me if I bring up topics for
discussion, that have already been posted in here.

I'm sure many of you have favorite ethnic foods that you like? Probably
have some you don't care for either? Let us know what your palate
desires, or what is a real disappointment to it?

My favorite would have to be Thai food, but I also like GOOD Mexican
food, Italian, German and some Asian dishes. I can't think of any that I
can honestly say I don't care for.

I suppose by ethnic that you mean non-Anglo-American cuisine.
Whatever that is. Anyway, my favourite is Hungarian Goulash, and
Chicken Paprikas. Both Hungarian dishes. I also like beef tongue,
but haven't had it in quite a while. My Mom used to simmer it for
quite a while in water with bay leaf, and a few lemons sliced. Then
she let it cool. Peeled it. Sliced it, and browned it in a skillet.
When it was nice and brown, she poured mushroom soup over the
lot(canned mushroom soup), and then baked it off in the oven. Some
really good stuff. Is that ethnic? We had mucho sutffed sweet and
hot peppers, and cabbage rolls. Stuffed dumplings (a pierogi kind of
deal), saurkraut with smoked pork chops, or regular pork chops, etc.
Pig tails of course, but made not in a Germanic way, but made in our
    Waterloo County way.

What kind of a smart-ass remark was that?! FYI I do have a computer, but
I use my newsreader on WebTV to access discussion groups, so what's it
to you anyway? Care to explain your "method of madness"??????

In general, if a food is popular in another country, I will most
probably like it too. There are some exceptions that I *have* tried:
Japanese Natto and barbecued eel, tripe whether Chinese or European and
    several Scandinavian fermented fishes.

I like a lot of them. We eat some form of Arabic, Mexican or Italian
food as our most common fall back. I'm not really fond of Japanese
food. Except for some sushi, tempura and some teriyaki are really the
only Japanese foods I like. I find their food to be quite bland. While
there are some specific African dishes I like, except for Northern
African food, I'm not as big a fan of their cooking either, but mostly
because it is unfamiliar to me. I don't care for much outside of
pastries from the Norse world. I probably wouldn't like much from
Greenland, but I haven't eaten anything from there that I know of. I'm
just basing that opinion on what I've read about their foods. I haven't
had as much exposure to Eastern European/Slavic foods, so aside from rye
bread, sour cream, blini and such, I don't really know a lot about their
    diet.

I'm a picky eater. I like some Mexican food. Some Italian. Only a few
Chinese dishes. Do not like Japanese, Indian or Thai. I do like Spaetzel
and Pierogies but haven't tried many other German or Polish foods. There
was a Russian restaurant on Staten Island and I liked everything I tried
there. But I was selective as to what I ordered. Mostly soup, salad and
side dishes. I'm not a big meat eater.

Hardly anyone uses WebTV any more. And it is generally presumed if you use
it that you are not computer literate. Plus you are severely limiting
yourself as to what you can do if you do use it.

That is a dangerous question to ask around here because some people will
try to come up with something much more exotic than what they actually
go out for or cook at home. This is the group where, when asked what
their favourite cheese is, some will come up with the most outlandish
cheeses. It will be something they has once somewhere and enjoyed in
that setting, but not something commonly available, and most definitely
not something they eat as often as they would if it were really their
    favourite.

That being said... being mainly of north western European background,
the food I most commonly prepare and eat is primarily western European
fare. When I go out for ethnic food it is likely to be Thai, Greek or
    Middle Eastern.

I have had some decent Mexican dishes, but most of it has been
disappointed. What passes for Mexican food around here is basically some
sort of Tex Mex, and it is usually way over priced considered it is made
with cheap ingredients like beans, corn and ground beef.

I kinda like Chinese but since I discovered Thai, a similar style of
cooking but better flavours... I go for that instead.

I have never been impressed with Japanese food. The local Japanese
restaurants put on a good show, but the food was always disappointing.
Indian food is pretty good and Thai is delicious.

Check. Ethnic is a style I didn't grow up with and/or don't live with
day to day now. Of course that's symetrical. To someone a continent
    away I eat ethnic food.

Some combinations of really distant ethnic foods should be really good.
I definitely need to try currywurst.

    > I will most probably like it too.

I'm with Anthony Bourdain on that. When a culture has had generations
to devise a cuisine, even if they started with cast off ingredients
there has been time to figure out how to make it delicious. My
tolerance for weird foods isn't as high as his, but it's high compared
    to almost all non-foodies.

More eel for me then. Excellent. Want my uni in trade? That'e the
only sushi ingredient I've been unimpressed with. If I'm hungry I'll
eat it but I'd really rather have the daikon.

So far I have not tried natto or luktefisk.

I love Indian, Arabic, Mexican Sechuan Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Afghani,
Cuban and Mexican foods, amongst others. Do any European countries count as
"ethnic"? *grin* I once had Croatian food in Belgium and loved the garlicky
sausages, grilled meats and pear brandy.

German dishes often sound aromatic to me, but I haven't tried that many besides
schnitzel, sauerbraten, various wursts, potato salad and sweets. As for
Italian, I'm a quarter Calabrese, so I definitely go for my southern Italian or
    Italian-American favorites.

Slavic and native American foods, from what I've heard described, don't appeal
    to me.
