Default Congratulations to New South Wales

They've elected an American-born woman who describes herself as a "lifelong
feminist" as their premier. She is the first former American and the first
woman to hold the job.

Interesting times ahead!

And she wasn't *elected* in the normal sense of that word in a
democracy. She was only "elected" by the parliamentary wing of her
own political party and, as that mob is in power in NSW, their party
leader becomes Premier by default.

The only female Premier of an Australian State who has been elected by
the population at large in a general election, is Queensland's Anna
Bligh. She was initially handed the job by the former Premier(1) and
then went on to win in her own right at the latest general election.
(That says a hell of a lot about the quality of our opposition which
failed to make headway against a totally dysfunctional Government!)

(1) Peter Beattie is currently enjoying residency in California,
having been appointed by Anna to the Americas as some sort of
trade/promotional functionary on behalf of Queensland.

Cheers, Phred.

Two Catholic doctors in South America were excommunicated for performing
an abortion. The female was carrying twins, and it was determined that
she could not carry them to term without significant risk due to her
size (she was nine years old). The pregnancy was, not surprisingly,
determined to be due to rape, since a girl that age can't give consent
(her stepfather had been having sex with her for three years). The
doctors appealed to the Vatican. They declined to intervene in local
affairs.
