Veggie tale: Man roasts broccoli in front of fire station
August 6, 2009
By JENNIFER JOHNSON Staff Writer
"A man with an appetite for broccoli set up a makeshift campfire Tuesday
outside the front door of the Park Ridge IL Fire Department's Devon and
Cumberland station, officials said.
Fire Lt. John Ortlund said the man came to the station that morning and
requested informational pamphlets about the city of Park Ridge. A
firefighter provided the man with the materials he sought, Ortlund said, and
the man went back outside to sit on the grass and read the pamphlets.
Several minutes later the man rang the station's doorbell again, explaining
that he needed to make a phone call and that his car had been stolen
earlier, Ortlund said. After making the call the man walked back outside,
but soon rang the station's doorbell again.
Upon opening the door a firefighter encountered the man holding a drum-set
stick with a piece of broccoli stuck to the end. The firefighter also
noticed a small fire was burning on the brick walkway not far from the
entrance, Ortlund said.
"The man said he was cooking broccoli on a campfire and used the pamphlets
we gave him to start a fire on the bricks," Ortlund explained, adding that
the man had some broccoli in his pocket, as well.
The fire, which burned itself out, reportedly caused no damage. No criminal
charges were filed, and a police officer gave the broccoli cook a ride to
the train station so he could return to Geneva, Illinois, Ortlund said.
Park Ridge Police Cmdr. Lou Jogmen said the incident appeared to be more of
a mental-health issue than a criminal act.
Ortlund agreed it was probably the most unusual thing he's encountered at
work.
"That's the first time someone tried to cook broccoli on the front lawn of
the firehouse," he said.
