(2008-04-09) New survey on the RFC site: Muddy fish
http://www.recfoodcooking.com/i
Thanks go to Blinky the Shark for suggesting that I do a survey about
this - and thanks to nancy also for bringing it up
I wrote it up, BTW - so Blinky is 'blameless' for any errors, omissions
etc. <veg>

I've never had muddy tasting fish. But then, I've only ever had farmed
catfish. I'm pretty sure the tilapia is also farmed.

Well I'll be dipped in spit, another #1 for Andy
And I was slow-poked about answering the survey.
I'll take the #12 "Improved Reception (Men's)" TFH!
Thanks but I never tried tilapia or catfish.
I'm a mahi-mahi, king salmon, cod, trout and halibut fishyman.

Not sure if the tilapia we get here is farmed or not. But the catfish
I've tried was 'wild'....

Thanks for the survey and it may prove very interesting. The URL
as received http://www.recfoodcooking.com/i does not work
because of the final i. Remove the "i" and it's fine. There are
not enough responses yet to draw any conclusions but I'll look
again later.

Ahhh... maybe that's how I snuck into #1? I backspaced the i after the
"server not found" error.
Tough!!! #12, pretty please?!!

It is, often imported from the Philipennes.

I've had really dirty tasting catfish and tilapia to the point where I
refuse to eat it anymore. I don't know if it was farmed or what, but I'm
sticking to whiting and pollock these days.

You did indeed, and it would have been a good question. However, as you
only suggested it to me after I had put up my version of the survey, it
was a tad late...

There are still only 27 responses but I see the mud question on
catfish is still 50:50 and a remarkable fraction of people
actually eat tilapia.

I love tilapia. The stuff I see now says it's a product of Costa Rica; I'd
stopped buying any from China. With the price of catfish (which I also
love) gone through the roof even though it's farmed all around my home,
tilapia is usually my fish of choice. That or cod fillets.

For the record, I suggested a category for "muddy fish" of any *other*
variety than the two mentioned -- so those of you who have had the
experience outside of the limited two choices available would have a way
to report that as well. That would be the significant omission.

I suggested it in response to your showing me your proposed survey and
saying:
"Hope this is OK? If I don't hear from you in the next 8 hours or so,
I'll put it up anyway..."
My "tad late" response was emailed within an hour or so, which seems to me
a pretty much shorter period than that 8 hours you gave me.

I have only catfish once in the last 30 years or so, and talapia
twice. I had never heard of talapia until about a year ago. It's not
bad. neither was muddy, but I did not think much of the catfish.
One fish that I have found to taste muddy is trout from warm water.
There used to be a trout farm near here and it was very good if I
bought it in the fall, winter or early spring, but once the water
got warm it got a little funky.
