We Need A Healthy Diet To..
- Provide enough energy & nutrients to keep our bodies working,
- Allow growth & repair of body tissue,
- Protect us against disease by keeping our immune systems working.

We need food to provide our bodies with Energy for our hearts to beat & for blood to be pumped around our bodies, and to allow us to carry out everyday activities such as walking or running.

The energy in food is released as a result of Chemical Reactions that take place in the body.
The energy in food is measured in unit of heat called calories and be written as kcal.

Food = Energy = Calories (kcal)

Nutrients that are capable of supplying the body with energy are Carbohydrates, Protein & Fat.
These give us different amounts of energy..

1 Gram of Carbohydrate = 4 kcal of Energy
1 Gram of Protein = 4 kcal of Energy
1 Gram of Fat = 9 kcal of Energy

A gram is a very small amount..
For Example: A heaped teaspoon of a food such as flour or custard powder is approximately 30g.

Fibre does not supply us with nutrients, but we need it to keep out digestive system working well & to stimulate our bodies to pass out waste products through our bowls.
