Fine wines don't often appear in the emporia that are near by north
Texas domicile. The usual crop is grocery store standard level so the
best source of wines for me has become online shopping where the only
limit is the one on my credit card.
Yet two weeks ago I passed through one of my regular liquor store
stops where the chain-smoking, Harley-riding middle-aged Texas farm
girl who always has a smile and happy greeting had a display on the
counter of a dozen bottles of Silver Oak Cabernet '04. I mentioned
that it seemed a bit out of place and probably wouldn't attract many
of the local buyers. She assured me that there were a few folks around
town that would recognize it and make it disappear by Christmas.
Well, I must have been a good boy this year because one of those
knowledgeable folks was the Santa in my house and I found two bottles
under my tree. Now, all I have to do is balance restraint between
infanticide and estimates of my longevity potential before enjoying
it.
